Elementary Program

The Elementary Religious Education Program at St. Mary’s takes place on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Licensed teachers are hired to teach the students. The core curriculum is Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. Lessons prepare children to hear the gospel for the weekend Mass. This publisher also has online support at pflaum.com where students can access additional activities, as well as a monthly newsletter for parents to help you reinforce their lessons at home. Each grade level will also have a set of prayers that they will master by the end of the year. These prayer expectations are set forth by the Diocese of St. Cloud and are consistent with what is expected of the St. Mary’s Elementary School children.

With the help of Father Steve, the teaching staff is committed to offering educational and spiritual experiences outside the classroom as well. These activities may include learning sessions in the church, Stations of the Cross, service projects, seasonal prayer services, a teaching mass, and reconciliation.

The Elementary Religious Education program runs from mid-September to early May.
For any questions or to register your child in the program, contact Brenda Becker at 763-9202.

Sacramental Preparation

Sacramental preparation for children who are members of the Church of St. Mary begins as they enter into second grade. This is a home-taught program with parish support and activities.

This time of preparation at home and at the parish are significant in the life of your child’s Catholic faith experience. Jesus offers us some sound advice in the gospels when he tells us to, “Fear not” and to “Be not afraid”. This advice applies to parents as they now begin to prepare their child to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Fear not! You are not alone during this process; our Religious Education staff is here to assist you.

Sacramental Formation

Both the family and the parish have important roles in preparing children for their sacraments. Preparing a child to receive a sacrament is a sacred responsibility. Both parent and parish play an important role. Below are the expectations.

The Family

The church acknowledges the important role the family has in preparing children for First Reconciliation. Parents are the first and most influential educators of their children. Children learn what they see so we encourage parents to model their faith by:

  • Being involved in the preparation of their child by meeting the formation requirements (below)
  • Sharing their faith story with their child
  • Participating in weekend Mass/Holy Days of Obligation
  • Modeling a Christian life (prayer, worship and service)
  • Praying for, and with, your child.

Formation Requirements

  • Be a registered practicing member of the Church of St. Mary
  • Enroll children in the Religious Education Program or St. Mary's School
  • Pay the sacramental preparation fee (financial assistance is available if needed)
  • Attend the parent meeting
  • Teach and prepare their child by completing the lessons
  • Attend the Learning Centers held at St. Mary's School
  • Provide a copy of the child's Baptismal Certificate

Parental involvement is essential in order for the candidate to receive the sacrament.
